We're consistently aiming for horses that can perform at the top of our sport, without ever playing the numbers game. We have no boxes to fill and no raised funds to spend. The rule is simple: we only buy horses we would love to own ourselves. This discipline gives our owners a better chance of success, and most of them reinvest with us.

Optimising every day in the horse's training life. Every horse in our care gets an added layer of welfare and health monitoring, built for performance. Independent vets and physios, separate from the stables, make regular visits to give us an unbiased read on soundness and wellbeing throughout the racing career, often catching what the trainer never saw. Every check is documented and reported to owners. Small issues get caught before they become big injuries.

Strategic planning. We place our horses where they can win, allowing them to build confidence and improve through their preparations. Our horses don't race to make up the numbers, to act as a race day travel companion for another horse, or to charge through the field for a shot at minor placings. Astute Bloodstock offers shared ownership, with our yearlings usually averaging 10 owners and European imports averaging 20 owners. Ownership costs vary depending on the purchase price of the horse. A 5% share in an Astute Bloodstock horse usually costs between $10K and $25K for a yearling, and between $40K and $80K for a European import.

Depending on whether the horse is spelling or in full training, the monthly cost of a 5% share varies between $100 and $500 at most.

Your monthly training or spelling bill covers everything, including: feed, rugs, staff, riders, farrier, worming, bedding, transport, track fees, gear fees, trainer's update, video update, and vet fees (sometimes invoiced separately, but usually added to your trainer's bill).

Race-day costs such as nomination, acceptance, and jockey fees also apply once your horse is racing. These are shared across the ownership group.

Astute Bloodstock doesn't charge any ongoing monthly fees.

Every owner is invoiced monthly for their share of the training cost, pro rata to their ownership size. Prize money can be paid directly by the racing authorities to the owner, or paid to your trainer, who will automatically offset it against your monthly training bill.

Astute Bloodstock bills you once at the outset. This covers the cost of your share, insurance, vetting, commission, and our one-time management fee.

No, we don't. Whilst we feel that we've had a big input on the outcome, we believe prize money is the reward for the owners only.

Astute Bloodstock has a close relationship with a handful of leading stables. We communicate with them weekly, if not more often, to agree on a plan, so each decision is carefully considered by both of us.

• Placement Strategy: Strategically entering horses in races where they can be competitive, avoiding races where they have little chance of success. As a rule, we rarely run horses with odds above 15/1.
• Jockey Selection: Booking the best jockeys available, particularly for stakes races.

The rule is simple: we only buy horses we would love to own ourselves. We put an enormous amount of research, data analysis, breeder study, and time into the selection process. Like with all investment, we believe you do well when you buy well, and buying well is our specialty.

Astute Bloodstock predominantly sources horses from the major yearling sales in Australia and New Zealand between January and April, including the Magic Millions Yearling Sale, Inglis Classic and Premier Sales, Inglis Easter Sale, and NZB Karaka Yearling Sale. We also buy from the Arqana Arc Sale and the Tattersalls Horses in Training Sale to acquire European horses we believe can win stakes races in Australia over middle-distance and staying trips. Last year, we bought horses from Australia, New Zealand, France, and Ireland.

No. Syndicators typically buy horses for a large ownership group with smaller shareholders, often charging a markup plus ongoing management fees. We don't charge markups; we charge a 5% commission and a single management fee for the entire racing career of the horse. Most of our yearlings are jointly owned by 8 to 10 people.

Yes. Trainers send owners regular updates on how their horse is tracking through each preparation, including trackwork video reports where possible, so you always know where things stand. Astute Bloodstock also sends its own updates, as we inspect our horses regularly both in training and while they're spelling.

Our strict buying criteria and patient management approach significantly reduce injury risk. However, every athlete is exposed to some wear and tear, and injuries can happen. We keep owners informed of any setbacks as soon as they arise, working closely with the trainer and veterinary team on a recovery plan, while being upfront about what it means for the horse's program.

We tend to sell horses once we feel they're no longer competitive at Saturday city class level in both Melbourne and Sydney, ideally while they still have some racing upside in lesser jurisdictions. Knowing when to sell is a key part of the job.

At our first consignment in 2025, our horses sold at the Chairman's Sale averaged $675,000 AUD; in 2026, that average was $380,000 AUD. Last year, we also sold a couple of fillies online through Inglis Digital, both where multiple winners but not Sydney or Melbourne Saturday winners, still achieving $85,000 and $95,000.
