Why do European horses perform so well in Australia?
· Most of the time, they have been bred to stay.
· They are generally lightly raced as 2yo.
· They have been trained to stay from day one.
· Track work over long rising gallops without turning favours the conditioning of stamina.
· Their leaner body shape allows them to stay lighter and sounder.
· With our warmer climate these horses generally thrive upon arrival.
· In France, pre-race medication is banned three weeks before race day whilst horses in Australia can be treated for niggling pain a week before racing.
· They reach complete maturity as 4yo at the time they are generally imported.
· 40% of European races are run over 2000m vs 8% in Australia only.
· The Australian “short and sharp” training methods allow fit imported stayers to gain fast twitch muscles and to add speed to their stamina based fitness.
· The French “sit and sprint” racing pattern is somewhat very similar to a typical Flemington style of race.
See how they improve !

Star Patrol impresses again at HQ
There was no wide-margin success for Star Patrol at his second visit down the Flemington straight on Saturday, but the stopwatch again made for favourable viewing ahead of his first attempt in Stakes company. Star Patrol produced a jaw-dropping seven-length win as an $11 chance in a three-year-old handicap over 1200 metres at Flemington last month, stopping the clock in 1:08.84.

Star Flemington showing puts stakes goals on agenda
The sensational 7l win of Star Patrol (Starspangledbanner) at Flemington on Monday has trainer Clint McDonald aiming up at stakes grade with the 3-year-old, with plenty of upside predicted after he relished his first shot down the famous Flemington straight. McDonald admits Star Patrol has surprised everyone with his progress, 'jumping out of the ground' in just two starts for the stable since transferring from Mark Newnham, having begun his career with Kacy Fogden in Queensland.
Amelia's Jewel to be aimed at WA spring riches
Boom Western Australian filly Amelia's Jewel (Siyouni {Fr}) may be headed to the paddock after her sensational win in the G2 Karrakatta Plate at Ascot on Saturday, but owner/breeder Peter Walsh and trainer Simon Miller are already plotting her spring targets.

FOR THE NOTEBOOK: Keep an eye on racing down under
Leo Powell from the Irish Field recently wrote an article about Amelia's Jewel and the terrific start she has made to her career.
Shelby Sixtysix Gives Toronado a Third G1 Winner
Trained in the country at Goulburn by Danny Williams, Astute Bloodstock yearling purchase Shelby Sixtysix has been the cult hero of the Sydney Autumn Carnival and capped a remarkable rise from contesting Highway races to winning an elite Group I sprint when powering to victory in the Group I ATC The Galaxy (1100m) at Rosehill on Saturday.
Shelby Sixtysix impresses against the very best!
We are thrilled with Shelby Sixtysix’s amazing performance in the 1000m Gr2 last Saturday when he defeated the world’s best sprinter Nature Strip and got very close to running past the champion Eduardo at level weights.

A star is born in WA
Peter Walsh the owner of Amelia Park in WA was my very first client when I started Astute Bloodstock 10 years ago. We shared many memories and none better than a wonderful trip to France visiting Chantilly and Normandy back in 2018 when Peter asked me to find him a couple of value mares at the Tattersalls July sales.
Brooklyn Hustle 4 years or consistency at stakes level
Back in 2011, I was privileged to help the Rosemont Stud team to secure a handful of value mares in Europe. At the Arqana December breeding sales Anthony Mithen and I were wowed by a magnificent Pivotal mare called Joint Aspiration. She was a stakes performer in the US and built like an Aussie sprinter and was in foal to Fastnet Rock at the time.
