Bloodstock Services

At Astute Bloodstock, our aim is “to find top horses for top people.”  In the long run, we will only succeed if our clients do.

To discuss how to start, grow or optimise your bloodstock portfolio, please call Louis on +61 408 666 251.

We are always on the lookout for top horses and we will often approach clients with opportunities. We believe that success is achieved  by seeking quality horses that fit a client’s budget, not through a high volume of horses. Yearlings, stallions, proven racehorses, broodmares, whatever you are seeking, we will put in the time to find the right horse.

Yearling Selection

The art of selecting yearlings that will become good racehorses is to identify the best athletes with physical traits that relate to their pedigree, while picturing their future physical development over the following twelve months.

Astute Bloodstock focuses on buying yearlings from superior nurseries, and over the years, we have built a database that continually monitors the stakes producing results of all vendors.

In addition to choosing superior athletes, we also carefully study the pedigrees beyond the catalogue page including the strike rate of specific bloodline crosses and the potential for residual value improvement.

Broodmare Selection

Buying a broodmare is an investment in the future.  It requires a good blend of physical strength, race track performance, depth of pedigree and compatibility with a variety of leading stallions.

Astute Bloodstock’s passion for pedigrees combined with our international experience gives our clients a global edge.  We follow the currency markets to find value as well as different opportunities provided by dispersal sales from top breeders around the world.

Astute Bloodstock attends all major broodmare sales in Australia, as well as frequent European ventures to the major broodmares sales at Tattersalls and Arqana. We also buy and sell privately.

Racehorse Acquisition

The fastest way for owners to race in the best company is by purchasing proven racehorses.  A horse in training is ready to race, has known ability and can reward its owners promptly.  There is often a higher up-front cost reflecting the reduced risk of failure.  Clever choices can provide value in this realm, and can get you in the winner’s circle quickly.

Australia’s big staying races have been dominated recently by European stayers. Louis’ French heritage and strong European networks give his clients an edge in this market with swift access to the right horses.

Buying locally based horses also has its rewards, as evidenced by Thump who won a Group 2 race at her second start for her new owner.

Stallions and Shares

A strong thoroughbred investment portfolio must include stallion equity, because stallions are by far the most financially rewarding asset in the thoroughbred business.  With good advice, the benefits for an investor can be stratospheric.

Astute Bloodstock has gained valuable experience from some of the greatest stud masters around the world, such as Alec Head, the Hayes family and John Messara.  This makes Astute Bloodstock well placed to provide advise on buying stallions and stallion shares.

Mating Advice

The commercial breeding industry is a blend of the fashion industry, the stock market and the grazing business. Industry specific knowledge will allow you to make choices that reduce your risks.

To determine the best outcome for you, Astute Bloodstock will:

  • physically inspect your mares and all Australian commercial stallions,

  • identify which stallions are the most likely to produce an athlete with your mares,

  • study the pedigree of each mare and researching the compatible bloodlines with a higher percentage of stakes winners to runners,

  • avoid the traps of inbreeding while aiming for blue hen duplications,

  • recommend the best yearling sale for the resulting progeny and evaluate its potential bracket price.
